South Side Man Wanted By Democrats for Recorder Leaders Make Overtures to Jacob J. Hartman, Well Known Resident of Cedar Avenue V Democratic slate makers are making every effort possible in their drive to get a South Scranton man, preferably of German lineage, as their candidate for recorder of deeds. A candidate possessing these qualifications, they say, is necessary In their program of supplying the rank and file with a cosmopolitan" and "well balanced, and It might be mentioned, a hand picked ticket. Leaders in the last twenty - four hours have been importuning Jacob J. Hartman, South Scranton - business man, to stand as a candidate for re corder. Mr. Hartman, who is well known throughout , the South Side, is understood to have given the leaders no great encouragement in the initial conferences. A definite answer from him is looked for early in the 'week. Earlier in the week the leaders ap proached Warren Frable, also a South Scranton merchant, and entreated him to consider the possibility of entering political campaign. At the time, it was said, he was offered a nomination for either recorder or city council. The overtures subsequently made to Mr. Hartman are taken to indicate that Mr. Frable is not overly anxious to enter a county fight. prothonotars. Mr. Hughes, at the Court House yesterday, intimated as much. He declared that he is giving the matter serious consideration and expects to reach a decision within a few days. Friends of Mr. Hughes last night expressed themselves as satis - fled that he will run. . , There Is also a possibility of Attorney John M. Gunster. entering the pro - thonotary fight. Mr. Gunster's name has been advanced In a number of quarters, and according to his friends, he is inclined to look with favor upon the proposition. Leaders in the next few days will probably put forth efforts to avoid a contest. Some of the leaders who last week were talking of getting opposition to Patrick McLane for sheriff at any cost. are mow said to take a different view of the situation. The threat of the Bellevue man's friends to give them real battle, It is satd, has some what , cooled the early enthusiasm of those who - were fighting him behind the closed doors of '"executive committee" sessions.
