West- Ilouston.Jonn-on. princi- The House was occupied during the larger part of this day a sitting in debating in committee of the whole, an amendment to the first section of the General Appropriation bill, consisting of a proviso, that the mileage of members should be calculated by the shortest mail route from their residences to the capital. The speeches were nearly all in a satirical vein, and were aimed at Mr, Greeley, who first suc ceeded in brinzinz the disgraceful peculations of memben of Congress, under the head of mileage, to the attention of the people. Mr. Brown, of Missis sippi, and Mr. Root, of Ohio, were particularly se vere and sarcastic. Mr. Brown intimated that Mr. Greeley was defrauding the people of eight dollars day by editing his newspaper from his desk here, while Mr. Root brought in many allusions about edi torial deadheads travelling without charge upon rail roads and steamboats. Of course, the public have nothing whatever to do with the little persenal griev ances memb ers may have against Mr. Greeley. Their approbation is due to him for having detected and exposed the fact that the treasury is annually defrauded of $62,000, on account of the mileage of mem ben of Congress, in such a way as to compel the at- tention of the unwilling and interested legislature to the abuse Mr. G. having borne these attacks with commendable patience for a ecuple of houn, requested the in dulgence of th committee for a few minutes before the vote was taken, while he replied to them. He will speak on the subject to-morrow. The Committee on the Judioiary of the Senate have reported back to the Senate Mr. Douglass's bill for the admission into the Union as one state, all our late acquisitions from Mexioo, under the name of
