with Chuck andVinsiNiApERLEE Open letter to the wonderful AAUW of Fontana: The winner of this year's Lamont Poetry Prize (Academy of American Poets) is Edward Field. The book of poems is "Stand Up, Friend, With Me." He Is going to be a favorite poet. There isn't a disappointing poem in the whole book. He's just plain nice a pleasant, sharp mind. It was a thrill to get a look at Fontana High with its musical fountain antf beautiful architecture! and sculpture. Surround "little savages" with beauty and they grow up to appreciate It, we ailways say! Thanks to Jack Truan, who was guide and friend when Vee Bee got lost at Fontana High for the AAUW talk and poetry reading. He carried her box of books and turned out to be a reader of "Place in the Sun." It is such a cozy feeling to have an assemblyman you know personally in the State Legislature. It makes us so proud, too, because he's doing a nice job. A conservationist, too! So we wrote to John P. Quimby and told him a little about poets. California has some good ones. And the good ones do not have big club fallowings to send in petitions for candidates for poet laureate. John promised to keep an ear to the ground. Real poets are simply earthy creatures. Happy to know you, Gladys Andrews, Redlands Woman of the Year! We enjoyed first meeting you and Mark last summer when you were doing the alto roles In "Elijah" and "Pirates of Penzance" at Red-lands Bowl. This weekend the Sierra Club will have a earcamp at Crystal Lake, San Gabriel Mountains, with a hike from Vincent Gap up Throop Peak to Mt. Islip, and a stop at Little Jimmy Springs. This is where the famous artist, Jimmy Swinner-ton, once camped overnight and painted the "Utile Jimmy" figure on the end of a fallen log. San B.'s Forrest Keck and Riverside's Corinne Haering are leaders. And May 25-26 the Sierrans will visit Laguna Mt. in the San Diego area to see the wildflow-ers. Leaders are Bob Grizzle, San B., and Ralph Goodale, Pomona. Eugene List, a favorite pianist at Kedlands Bowl, is now on extended tour of Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania and Poland. In Prague he was a judge in the Smetana International Competition. This was a second tour of duty for List as a judge. Last year he accepted Dimitri Shostakovich's invitation to be on the jury for the Second International Tschai-kowsky Competition in Moscow. More BTL Cities Next Season NEW YORK (AP) A million and a half spectators in 164 cities saw four Broadway Theater League shows sent on tour this season by National Performing Arts. Julian Olney, managing director of the producing organization, said that because of the lively business more cities will be added to the coast-to-coast itinerary next year. The four hits displayed were "Carnival," "A Shot in the Dark," "The Sound of Music" and "Mary, Mary." The lineup for 1963-64 is to include the latter two, plus "Take Her,
