TUESDAY EVENING, JUNE 9, 1959 Reformatory Integration Plan Fails PENDLETON, Ind. - Un -Indiana -Indiana Reformatory officials say an Informal poll of inmates has led to thj abandonment of a proposed ·Uempt *t integrated living at the reformatory. All dormitories at the reformatory reformatory are segregated, but it had been planned to house both Negroes Negroes and whites in a new dormitory dormitory which will be opened later this month. The new building will have an til-Negro population, o f f i c ia 1 s - taid, because the informal poll showed sentiment against the integration integration plan. Only four of 60 white inmates Interviewed appeared willing to move 5n on an integrated basis and only 20 of 40 Negroes favored the idea. The reformatory has about 2,900 inmates, more than 600 of them Negroes. Most other activities at the in- ititution are integrated.
