Meet Youthful Toni Arden s BY JOEY SASSO GINGER Toni Arden's success in J New York City has softened what was one of the greatest of the year to any performer. When she got her first solo engagement engagement at the Capitol Theater recently, she made an instant hit, but two days later woke up laryngitis and had to cancel out. A thing like that is bad enough for any trouper, but Toni had just turned 21 the month before, and was getting her "big break." Now, her stint at the Copabanca is than making up for it. In th« words of an admiring comic, she's "fracturing" the audience. Toni's voice is deep and mature, belying the fact that she's only five feet tall and can pass for a high school student. The reason for that is due to her training opera given by her father, the Phillip Ardizonne, who sang with La Scala and the Met. Even though she decided long ago i that she didn't want to be an opera singer, she continued to study it, and that training has given her wonderful, control over her voice, expert phrasing and shading of The tones, and also in poise, and expression, the it's unusual to see someone Toni in show business. Though abbre- she has performed with a since she got out of high school, she has a freshness about her, something sweet and unspoiled, that bears no resemblance to the usual sophisticated, blase veneer that covers the faces and personalities personalities of many of the gals in show business. Much. of that is attributed to the fact that she's always lived with, and followed the parental advice of her folks. She records for Columbia, and has a big hit in "Rain." She collaborated with Sam Gallup, a lyricist, on a new song called It Wise," which she'll soon record, and is now working on another one. Her band experience started ·when she sang at a high school dance upon the insistence of friends, and someone there was impressed with her voice, he is her an audition with AI Trace. in New York, then worked with Joe Reichman and Shep Fields orchestras in th« next couple of years, until she decided to become a solo.
