Ex-Altonian, Made It in Vegas, Dies Former Atonian Wilbur Clark, 57, millionaire hotel man and one;of the first to move intQ.the lush Las Vegas, Nev., gambling industry, died following a heart attack Friday at a LaJolla, Calif., clinic. Clark lived in Alton as a child. A brother, Harold, of San Diego, Calif., worked for a time for Shell Oil Co., and is well known in the Alton-Wood River area. However, Wilbur Clark, a na live of Keyesport, HI., who hit a financial jackpot in Las Vegas, and reportedly became a multi millionaire, left the area as a child. He was known chiefly as the builder of the Desert Inn, one o. the first plush gambling estab lishments on the famous Las Vegas strip.....,.',. , Clark left home at 19 and went to San,J)|egQ,,where*he worked at various times as an elevator operator, dishwasher, and bus )oy. He worked up to the Job of lead bellboy at San Diego's Mel Knickerbocker and saved its earnings until he had enough to open a bar and restaurant. He developed this original enterprise enterprise into a chain of night spots Clark moved to Las Vegas in L944 and bought a part interest hi El Rancho Vegas motel, later acquiring full ownership.
