College Of Artesia To Hold Tri State And Mexico Awards Show According to Prof. Chester Kwiecinski of the College of Artesia Art Department, "the Southwest has so much in its favor for becoming a cultural center for all the arts that it's about time someone stirred something up out here." As an opportunity for the "many, very fine artists here who are stranded in the wilderness without an outlet," Profs. William Rakocy and Kwiecinski have announced the college's first annual "Tri-State and Mexico" watercolor show, an outlet that should match the excitement and hopes of Kwiecinski's opening statement. Leading attractions of the show, to be held at the college from mid-May to mid-June, are the $500 in award money and the nationally recognized name of artist Peter Hurd. Kurd, who resides in San Patricio, N. M., has consented to act as judge for the all-watercolor show. There will be four prizes—$200, $150, $100, and $50. The decision to limit the show to watercolors is indicative of Rakocy's intention to keep the show small, despite the wide- area coverage of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Mexico. "We have the highest hopes for the show," he states, "and will welcome works for judging from any and all adult artists." Deadline for entries, limited to two per artist, is May 5. Hurd will judge the show between then and May 15. A reception is planned for participating artists on the opening day, in accord with the attempt to "attract to this campus some of the best painters in the Southwest." Entry fee is two dollars, and all entries should be framed but not glazed, due to shipping hazards, Both Rakocy and Kwiecinski will collaborate with Hurd on selections of works. For further information and entry blanks write to the College of Artesia in care of William Rakocy or diet Kwiecinski, Artesia, New Mexico 88210.
