25 YEARS AGO 1948 Heavy rains deluges northwest Iowa, with 4.32 inches since June 11, breaking a lone dry spell. Two great and dearly beloved pioneers of the area south of Alton—Gerrit Ruisch and Nick Ruppert, passed away. Mr. Ruisch widely known thresherman, was born at Pella March 12, 1869. Mr. Ruppert, a highly regarded retired farmer, was born in the duchy of Luxembourg, Europe, Oct. 25, 1870. While visiting in the Pacific northwest, Dr. Wm. Doornink landed a 32-lb. salmon and "Deke" Klay had to be satisfied with a 24-lb. one. William Vrieze, popular Alton citizen, died suddenly from a heart attack. He was born at Alton July 3, 1883. 50 YEARS AGO 1923 Dr. Arnold F. Pins, who grew up at Alton, was opening a dental practice in Oak Park, Land near Alton, comprising the Jan Muyskens estate, was sold at auction, the price fqr the 344.26 acres averaging $207.50. The route of primary road 10 from Alton to Granville was still undetermined. Mrs. Catherine Schnee, 85, of Alton died June 24. Catherine Eulberg was born June 17, 1838, in Mendt Province, Nassau, coming to the U.S. with her parents in 1854. She and her husband and family moved to Sioux county in 1876.
