Boards of education have spent more than, a million dollars since last September for improved life and property protection against fire. Ed J. Herron, state fire marshal,, said the million dollars repre'-. sented expenditures for improvements improvements ordered after inspections... by'the state fire marshals' office. "Actually," Herron declared, "the million dollars is very conservative. conservative. Even with crimped budgets, budgets, school officials have moved moved swiftly to comply with fire- regulations." Herron cited two factors for the increased concern about fire dangers dangers in school buildings. . He said one of these was the improved fire law · which went into effect two years ago. Herron said results are "now beginning to flow" from the revised law. .' .' He said the other was the tragic fire which'swept Chicago's Our Lady of Angels School, claiming claiming the lives of 91 youngsters. ' "The Chicago fire so shocked the public, Herron said, "that the . 'results dame 'almost,overnight."; :. "Since then," Herron declared, ' "school officials moved into full swing. We 'haven't had a single; example of defiance of, any or- der from this department; This is true despite the fact that many districts find money is scarce. But they are finding ways -of solving their .problems, nevertheless." Herron said that for the first time in history some Iowa schools will have sprinkler systems as part of,. their fire protection. He aid ,al least nine buildings in Iowa will open the : new school year with this safety feature, added added during the past summer. ;·· Schools in Des Moines (St. Joseph Joseph Academy),- Mason City, Sioux-City, Monticello and Davenport Davenport are now equipped .with sprinklers.
