Morris Griffith Had A Narrow cape Caused by a Spark. Es- At 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon an explosion occurred in the prismatic press building at the Powder Works that resulted in the death, of Carlyle Ross-, and in the narrow escape of other employes. At the time Ross was engaged In mixing black powder with water in a box for priming purposes. He used a copper scoop which struck a steel nail, which was afterwards found in the box, producing a spark and causing the explosion. Ross, though blinded, ran out of the building towards the creek, but before he reached it he was grabbed by employes, who tore his burning clothes from him. He was faken to his home on Soquel Av., East Santa Cruz, where it was found he had been badly burned on the face, head and body. On one side of his head is a severe wound made by a piece of wood. The boy, who possessed more than the ordinary amount of grit, said he believed the explosion was caused by a spark. He requested that his mother, who is now at Campbell, Santa Clara Co., be not told of the accident. He constantly called for water, showing that he had inhaled fire. Ross is a graduate of the High School, and was employed in the "Sentinel" office after graduation. Afterwards he obtained employment at the Powder Works, where he was employed in the navy smokeless plant until three days ago, when he was assigned to the prismatic press building. Ross died at an early hour this morning. Morris Griffith had a close call. He
