Reggie Oliver basketball - Trojans throttle Whippets By KEN MURRAY Mercury...
Trojans throttle Whippets By KEN MURRAY Mercury Sports Editor Downingtown is a team on the backslide. B-u-m- P. Which caught a team playing like the wind. Pottstown. W-h-o-o-s-h. It was your proverbial mismatch, the grim reaper for Downingtown, a nolo contendere of sorts. The Trojans greased the home chute, where they are tough on everybody, and then shoved the struggling Whippets down. Pottstown, Pottstown, giddy with playoff fever, romped to a 69-47 Ches-Mont League victory Tuesday night. A 22 point win, it wasn't. More like 30. “We’re going through a complete regression type thing,” said a flustered Bob Boyer, boss of the Whippets. “It’s mental concentration. concentration. It seems like we’re going backwards.” He’s right. Downingtown went a surprising 6-4 the first half, and has since slumped off to 2-5 in the second. The Whippets were guilty of a multitude of sins against the swift and surging Trojans. Like 32 turnovers against full court pressure. And a 21- for-69 shooting night from the floor. Worst of all, they couldn’t contain Pottstown’s Pottstown’s fast break. The fast break, of course, is the meat-and- potatoes of the Trojan offense. “Once we get running,” running,” said the Trojans’ Robert Harris, “it seems like everything comes together.” Harris helped see to it with the best all-round game of his season, and perhaps of his career. He slipped in 18 points, handed out five assists and triggered the break with 11 rebounds. “We’ve got to get the boards,” Harris explained. explained. “We’re a small team, so everybody’s got to do his part.” The Trojans got 14 points from Reggie Oliver, 26-for-62 shooting, and in general, lots of positive signs. “It’s like we’ve caught a second wind,” coach Jan Fritz offered after their third straight victory. “I just sense that we’re looking for the fast break more now. We were playing too slow a tempo for five, six games in a row. We’re back to where we were in the middle of McCleary lifts Falcons Jim McCleary sat out a whole week with illness. Then he sat out the first quarter Tuesday night. Pottsgrove’s talented guard was chomping at the bit, right? When he finally got to play, McCleary dumped in 17 points and eased the Falcons past Henderson, 42-38, in a Ches-Mont Falcons (3-4, 7-12) struggled to a 2-2 draw against the Warriors (43). (43). “Then we put Jimmy in and he started to move us a little,” Rutter noted. McCleary hooped eight of his 17 in the second period. It was 18-14, Pottsgrove, Pottsgrove, at the half. And 9 period. Burkert also picked off eight rebounds, tying Guy Carter for team honors. Carter helped hold Henderson’s Mark Loper to four points. “When you beat Henderson twice in one year,” Rutter said, “it’s a good year.” The Falcons beat the the season.” The Trojans are also up to 6-2 this half (16-4 overall) and in second place after Coatesville’s 54-45 win over Boyertown. Boyertown. First place is only a tantalizing Coatesville upset away, right coach? ‘‘Till we’re mathematically out of it, we’re looking at it,” Fritz responded. The Trojans didn't like the first quarter mathematics Tuesday, when Downingtown hung within 12-10. Two minutes into period two it was 12-12. Then Oliver flipped in three straight layups and the race was on. “I was pleased with the fast break and the way we ran our offense when we didn’t have the break,” Fritz informed. When the break didn’t develop, the Trojans worked the ball to Barry Robinson or Brian Lacey or Oliver for a corner jumper. Then it wasz-i-p.
