Keyes Will Succeed Potter As Civil Defense Chief Maj. Robert A. Keyes of Helena | coast defense as a bomber luision chil-president as appointed by Gov. J. Hugo Aronson today tu succeed Hugh Potter as state civil defense director for an indefinite term, effective Oct. 1. 'otter resigned to accept the Helena postmastorship. He said today that he also will assume his duties as postmaster Oct. 1. He succeeds Owen L. Morris, who has heen acting postmaster. Keyes has been connected with the Montana national guard for many years. For the past 10 years he has been affilialcd with the adjutant general's department, department, serving as assistant adjutant adjutant general since June 1. 1949. Rnieman Native Kcyes was born at Rozcmaii Ocl. 15. 1916, and completed two years of engineering at Montana State college. He is married and has a daughter, Melody, 11. Keyes entered service Sept. 16. 1940, when he joined the Montana national guard at Boieman. He served with the 163rd infantry until until the early port of 1942. when he translerred to Hie air corps as an aviation cadet. He was commissioned commissioned a second lieutenant at Victorville. Calif., Nov. 21, 1942. lie was assigned to the west olticer at Portland and Seattle, then went to England wiih the Eighth air force in June, 1944. He let! active service in November, 1945, joining the air force reserve, and became affiliated with the Montana national guard in 1947 when it was reorganized, at Doze-man, Doze-man, Doze-man, where he served as regimental regimental headquarters company commander commander for one year. Here Since 1343 He came to Helena in 1949 to take the position of assistant adjutant adjutant general. This post was created by the 1949 stale legislature, legislature, and Keyes was the first tD fill it. His chief duties have been organization and supervision of the various national guard units. Poller, outgoing civil defense director, has served in that capacity since 1953 and was the third person to huld that position.
