Martha Tilton Will Appear In Television Special Soon Copley News Service HOLLYWOOD - In the late ’30s and early ’40s, when she was Benny Goodman’s girl singer, fans called her “liltin’ Martha Tilton.’' And she’s still a liltin’ lady with a lilt to her walk, a lilt to her conversation and the lil- tin’est smile you ever saw. She came into the Padrino Room of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel the other day to talk about “The Queen of the Stardust Stardust Ballroom,” a two-hour music music drama for CBS in which she’s appearing, but she also talked about Goodman, her family and, of course, her biggest biggest hit of all, “And the Angels Sing.” “Ziggy Elman recorded it first,” she remembered. “He’d taken it from a Jewish wedding song and had recorded it as an instrumental. “Benny heard it and liked it and decided to record it as a vocal, so Johnny Mercer wrote lyrics. “I didn’t expect it to be a hit, because Johnny was literally writing the words as we went along. We recorded at Victor, and, after every take, he’d change a line But the song was a hit right away.” Benny had come to California to make a picture with Dick Powell and Frances Langford when he encountered Martha She was singing with a group called Three Hits and a Miss and was doing vocal back up work on Kay Kyser’s “Kollege of Musical Knowledge,” a radio show, when she was invited to audition for the jazz maestro. “I don’t think Benny really wanted a vocalist,” she says, “because he was only interested interested in instrumental music, but lie realized he had to have one “On Kay Kyser’s show, I worked with a chorus (Jo Stafford Stafford was in it, incidentally ), but I sang a four-bar solo, and that’s what attracted Benny’s manager’s attention. “He was the one who suggested suggested the audition. “Anyway, I auditioned, and during about my third song. In the drama, which stars Maureen Stapleton and Charles Burning, she plays a ballroom singer. It will be aired by CBS sometime during the 1974-75 television television season. Married twice, Martha has three children, two sons by her first marriage and a 20-year-old daughter by her second. Her first husband was Goodman’s Goodman’s manager, and her second, second, formerly a test pilot for North American, works for Rockwell International. “My oldest son is with Capitol Records,” Martha said, “and my youngest works for the city “My sons are bachelors, but I wish they’d get married, be cause I want grandchildren.
