ELEVATED WALK FALLS INTO ROADWAY Part of O. K. Street Retaining Wall Went Down With It Lodging tor a T ime Tnreaitnea. LiK.wn.icd b K-..1S. At C o'clock last evening about 40 feet ot the elevated walk on O. K. St., next to the Pythian Hall, reaching over the street way In front of tho Newman and adjacent lodging houses, suddenly gave way, crashing with a portion of the retaining wall into the roadway 15 feet below. The giving way of the retaining wall, causing the fall of the walk, was occasioned by water which during the several recent storms has undermined many embankments and walls along the streets in the central portion of the city. More or less danger is connected connected with the fact, and an inspection inspection of walls with subsequent repairs in accordance with findings is in order. order. When the wall in front of the Newman Newman House went out last evening the crash accompanying attracted a large crowd. The buildings back of the wall gave slightly as the lower ground slipped out, and for a time it was feared they would follow the walk in its fall. Though the walk is one that is much traveled and the street below is usually a busy one at the hour at which tho retaining wall fell, it happened yesterday that there was no one on either the street or the walk when the latter and the retaining retaining wall tumbled down. The street is blocked to traffic. -to
