Com-merson. Although his name, and his spelling of the name of the plant, suggest he was British, it turns out that he was a Frenchman, Philibert by pre-name, a botanist and a valued contemporary of Linnaeus, who accompanied de Bougainville on a tour of the world. He died in 1773 on Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, after a four-year residence. Among his works
