Chicago man is found dead at the base of 1 00-foot cliff PORTLAND (AP) - The body of a 23-year-old Chicago man, who was in the Northwest seeking a forestry job, was found Thursday at the base of a 100-foot cliff in the Columbia River Gorge east of Portland. He is believed to ' be the same man who robbed a branch of Benjamin Franklin Savings & Loan in Portland earlier this month, the FBI said. John E. Hawthorne apparently fell to his death while hiking west of Wahkeena Falls, Multnomah County sheriff's deputies said. He apparently died Dec. 14 while en route to a job interview in Moscow, Idaho, officers said. Officers found $50 and expensive camera equipment in his four-wheel drive vehicle Tuesday when they investigated after observing it parked in the same location for five days. Motel receipts and matchbook covers led officers to discover that Hawthorne, a forestry graduate from Duke University, had been in Seattle and Kent, Wash., and Beaverton and Tigard, Ore. for job interviews. A search of the area on Wednesday didn't turn up anything, and Explorer Scouts joined in the search on Thursday.
