Monkey Show Ends - Monkey "Show" Ends John Scopes, of Dayton,...
Monkey "Show" Ends John Scopes, of Dayton, Tenn., has been found GUILTY teaching that he believes man is a refined monkey or he taught is called EVOLUTION and evolution is barred v laws of Tennessee. As Mr. Scopes admitted the teaching was nothing for the jury to do but find him guilty! The gave William Jennings Bryan, fundamentalist; and' Clarence Darrow, agnostic, the opportunity for a lot of advertising. Neither of these gentlemen object to this. As A SUMMER the trial of Scopes proved to be a real monkey show.. But--seriously. Who wants a monkey for a 27-times or greater, ancestor? Apart from any evidence or argument persuasion, pro or con, NONE OF US LIKES the idea, -we do not like monkeys. There is little in the nature or mice of a monkey to endear him to our affections. We admire him. We .may even, by straining a point, respect Mankind, having a good opinion of himself, does not'like himself burlesqued THE MONKEY IS A BURLESQUE MAN. Quite a good case may be made for the monkey; only makes his physical resemblance- to us MORE It may be said that the monkey minds his own business lacks .some of the meannesses that are common traits in humanity. It may be said that monkeys do not attain or seek- individual success by means which mankind condemns .-the abstract and practices in the concrete. The greed, of. monkey is less appalling than that sometimes manifested mankind. NEVERTHELESS; HE LOOKS LIKE A MAN, WE RESENT IT. The monkey is a humiliation for us. that is an inheritance, perhaps it traces back to man's departure from monkey .kin. Perhaps it proves just ,and arises from an instinctive sense of. difference, sharpened by the -UNCOMFORTABLE PHYSICAL RESEMBLANCE be. twee'n monkey and man. · I I
