MAN SEEKS DEATH FOR SELFAHD FAMILY Deserted by His Wife, Whu Had Begun Divorce Proceedings, Leo Pranikoff Asphyxiates Himself and One Child. TWO OTHER CHILDREN ARE NOT EXPECTED TO RECOVER Tragic Occurrence Was the Result of Frequent Quarrels Between Man and Wife, Who Recently Arrived From Russia. ADE. 6 years old. - Pranikoff had had trouble with his wife for several months. Last Sunday the neighbors say he drore her from the house with a knife. In her flight she seised no of their four children. . - Testerday she began divorce proceedings against her husband. The news of this is supposed to have led him to attempt suicide. Pranikoff disconnected the rubber hose attached to a small gas stoye in the kitchen of the home, 667 Elk. Grove avenue, and placed the tube In his mouth. The three children, who were asleep in a small bedroom, connecting with, the kitchen, evidently were awakened by the odor of the gas and struggled to the kitchen. There they were overcome by the fumes, one of them whiletrying .to open the kitchen door. When the bodies were found two of the children were lying together in the middle of the floor, dressed in their nightrobea. The other was found near the door. The fresh air entering through the crack under the door probably saved his life. The bodies were found by Samuel Taylor, who lives in the same house.. His wife noticed the odor of gas and called his attention to It. lit went upstairs to the Pranikoff apartments and forced open the kitchen door, pushing aside Ade, the 6-year-old boy, who had fallen on the other side.. - " Taylor found Leo Pranikoff, the father, collapsed in a chair near the sink. ' On the sink stood the gas stove from which he secured the gas tube which was connected to the gas jet. In his hand be held the end of the rubber tube leading to the gas pipe in the wall. .. . . In the middle of the floor Otto, the 3-year-old boy, and Mina, the girl, were lying side by side. Ade, the oldest child, was at the door, which he had evidently been trying to open when he lost conclousnezs. The police are trying to find Mrs. Pranikoff. the mother, who has been away from home since last Saturday. With her she has the youngest child. The two came to this country lets than a year ago from Russia. Pranikoff was a musician and was paid $30 a week. During the last few months quarrels between the man and wife have been frequent. The onhapplners culminated last "Saturday when, Mrs. Pranikoff says In ber divorce bill, her husband drove her from. the house with a knife. In her flight she picked up the youngest child. Since that time Pranikoff, in spite of efforts, has been unable to see her. Friday afternoon he received notice that his wife bad begun divorce proceedings against him in the Superior court. .Dr. J. K. Golden, 1134 Milwaukee avenue. was called by Taylor. Every effort was made to save their lives. Artificial respiration was resorted to. After several hours' work the doctor said there was no hope for them and that they! would undoubtedly die. . The police of the Rawson street station were notified of the tragedy, and they are making efforts to find) Mrs. Pranikoff .and tell her of her husband's death.
