Sermon - Sermon- 'Brink of Indecision' By REV. HARRY L....
Sermon- 'Brink of Indecision' By REV. HARRY L. HALL Pastor of Christus Evangelical Lutheran Church, Camden Many a person has stood at the brink of indecision, not knowing whether to share his pride with the proud or his love with the unlovely. The apostle Peter was confronted in this way by a certain exclusive group called the "circumcision party." They hoped he would refrain from eating with the Gentiles. The Gentiles were regarded as unclean, much the same as were lepers and certain foods. The "circumcision party" was obedient to all the laws; they called themselves followers of Christ. It seemed defiling to them that so eloquent an eyewitness as Peter would bring his great message of Christ's ministry to those unworthy. The question that faced Peter was whether the Christian Church should defined, highly cultured, law fulfillin ant, exclusive group. Or should larger circle of persons less dis within society, uncultured in the customs of society, having different backgrounds, possessing only a common taiin. mat same question has faced many a local church since. It faces every congregation which assumes the right to vote on the admission of men of faith. There was a logic that was persuasive about not eating with the Gentiles. In that way the gram would be sure to maintain its identity and individuals would not be overexposed to the ways of the wicked. When threatened from without a group doses ranks to protect itself. Self-discipline and identity should be striven for, but not at the cost of a fatal danger. The church which has its head buried and its knees acainst its chest has asphyxiated its purpose. Peter had a vision of all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds. And a voice said, "kill and eat." But Peter protested. "No Lord, for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean." And the voice was heard again: "What God has cleansed you must not call common." The intent of the vision is to point out that God made the whole world clean it is God's will that the church bring the message of salvation to include all whom He has made. uld be a well j vf filling, pleas- I W it include a I J stinguishable J i I
