Science Institute Finalists 2 Arizona Pupils In Top U.S. 40 TWO ARIZONA high school science students are among 40 finalists finalists selected in the 19th annual national science search. They are Gayle Ann Edlund; 17, of 118 East Country Club Dr., and David Russell Hearn, 18, of Tucson. They have been awarded expense-paid trips to Washington, where they will compete with 38 other top science students for $34,250 in Westinghouse scholarships during a five-day Science Talent Institute Institute beginning March 3. THE TOP 40 were chosen from 29,000 top-ranking top-ranking science students in all parts of the nation. Miss Edlund is a senior at North Phoenix High School, and the daughter of Mrs. Clarence A. Edlund. Edlund. She ranks mathematics and science as her favorite subjects, and her hobbies include photography, photography, astronomy, dancing, and piano. A top- ranking student in her class, she would like ; to study, medicine or dentistry. For the talent search, she conducted a study of beans and peas to see if they contained lectins, which are substances that cause coagulation of human blood cells. HEARN, a senior honor student at Tucson High School, submitted a project of designing, constructing and testing smalt scale plasma jets, a* type of laboratory device to produce temperatures-possibly high enough for a fusion reaction. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell E. Hearn. His science instructor instructor describes him as "the best science student I have had in . 28 years of teaching." Last year he won first prize in the Southern Arizona Science Fair and second in the state.mathematics contest. He is a rifle marksman, and enjoys model railroading as a hobby. Miss Edlund
