Af- rviot.irtMrvt. n1ifn1 lirt sitfiT for the new Capital City of Lincoln. 1 On September 7th, 1867, the first weekly issue was printed in Nebraska City, as there was no building and no pessary printing material' in the village of Lancaster, embracing a half dozen houses, nowvthc city of Lincoln. A printing outfit consisting of secondhand machinery was hauled overland from Nebraska City, and the little paper was launched. It continued as a weekly until 1870 when the first railroad entered the city. It then became a daily. At the time of securing a new location at the Southwest corner of Ninth and-0 Streets, in the building recently con demned and torn down, the Sunday Journal was first issued, January 19, 1871, consisting of four pages, the same as regular week-day issues. . The reproduction of the first page of this Sunday paper shows that practically all of the business and professional men of the new city were believers in advertising or in the theory of "supporting" the city's daily paper, Advertising is not offered on the basis of "support" in these modern days. At least it should not be purchased on that basis. It has proven its real w-orth by results. The splendid paper furnished readers today is made possible by a grouping of all the leading features of both of Lincoln's Sunday papers, the Journal and the Star. Tremen-- dous progress has been, made since 1873. It would be difficult vto visualize the Sunday paper of sixty years hence, just as it was impossible to foresee today's paper sixty years ago. Twenty-seven years ago, or on December 11, 1904, the first issue of the Lincoln Sunday Star appeared. The Sunday paper was started a little more than two years after the daily evening issue was established by D. E. Thompson, who is now Jiving in California, but who for many years was a distinguished citizen of this state. ' In that initial issue, which embraced thirty-two pages, including comics, features, and news, one of the main stories dealt with , a young soldier, a Nebraskan, w-ho later was to attain world fame. The plans for the presidential inauguration the following March contained mention of the fact that Captain John J. Pershing would be a member , of General Chaffee's staff, who. would be in charge of the ceremony, Captain Pershing, now a general, was commander-in-chief of the American Expeditionary forces in France.. On the preceding night, the laboring men of Lincoln had met and endorsed a slate which included George A. Adams as a candidate for. mayor and George Overton and Joseph Wolfe as candidates for excisemen. From across the seas, a London cable revives the memory of the imperial Russian : empire, with the assurance that the Czar's soldiers, quartered around Mukden, now the focal point in warlike maneuvers by the Japanese and Chinese, were not underfed. In those twenty-seven years the Japanese armies ousted the soldiers of the Czar from Manchuria and the splendor of, the empire crumpled under tidal waves of Communism. From Sidney, center of the cattle empire, came the word that the old order of the reign on the frontier Was disappearing under the march of civilization. . In the news stories and in the advertisements were the names of Lincoln's pioneers, many of whom have finished their labors. SUPREME COURT SYLLABI. XTie following opinions were filed Paine, J. Goss, C. J., and Good, that, If they are annexed after the mortgage Is given, the mortgagee nan hold them as against the mortgagor.
