Uncovering history Group cleaning up old Flat Rock Cemetery By KRISTIN FAUREST Special Writer Jim Zaring leans over and gently tries to brush the dust off a tombstone with his hand. When a century's worth of dirt doesn't give way, he just shakes his head without surprise. "I'll have to use a wire brush on that one." Zaring, of Anchorage, walks among the tombstones in Flat Rock Cemetery, on a one-acre plot directly across KY 362 from the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women near Pewee Valley. The engraving on many of the stones is too worn to read. Some of the stones have disappeared altogether. "See, there's graves all over here," Zaring said, pointing to depressed areas in the ground. "There's rows of them all through." Zaring is a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church on Aiken Road. But Pleasant Grove used to be called Flat Rock Baptist Church, and it was originally on the same land as the cemetery. Zaring is one of several people both church members and non-members who have spent the past two months trying to clean up the long-neglected graveyard. Zaring said he has been interested in the task for a decade but couldn't attract interest until recently. Volunteers had to clear out old stumps, dead trees, thick tangles of vine, and endless layers of dead leaves and debris before they could even walk around the graveyard. They've since planted white pines and are cleaning off stones and re-erecting some that have fallen. "We hope to get a plaque up of some kind, because it is historic," Zaring said. "We didn't want to see it going to waste. We'd even like to set up an endowment fund to maintain it."
