Thomas D. Powell BISHOPVILLE, SC. - Thomas D. Powell, 66, died Saturday, April 24, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Powell was born in Poughkeepsie, the son of the late Thomas D. & Lucille Olsen PowelL He was a graduate of Poughkeepsie public schools. He was an Air Force Veteran and was a crew chief during the Korean War. Mr. Powell joined the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department in 1962 and was awarded the City of Poughkeep - sie's highest honor. The "Medal of Honor" in 1982 for valor in the line of duty during the explosion of the Bern - scolor Dye Factory. Mr. Powell was responsible for saving the lives of three civilians and recovering the remains of two. He was later promoted to Fire Inspector where he revamped the Inspectors Bureau and updated their re cord keeping as well as closing several hazardous multi family houses. Upon retiremenL Mr. Powell moved to Bishopville, S C. in Lee County and was acuvety involved in many community activities and was awarded Lee County's "Certificate of Appreciation'' for his work as a volunteer at the Lee County Animal Shelter. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Snyder Powell of Bishopville, SC; two sons, Thomas DeForrest Powell of Poughkeepsie; Douglas Powell of Hyde Park; his daughter, Deborah Cole of Hyde Park; and seven grandchildren. Visitation will be 6 - 8 pm., Tuesday, at Norton Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers and food, please honor Mr. Powell's memory by supporting Lee County Animal Shelter andor the South Carolina Museum.
