Sophia Council Moves To Preserve Shrubbery Sophia Mayor Robert Porter as his last official act as heac of the town's administration, at the Tuesday night Council meeting, urged the preservation of the town's trees. The council supported Mayor Porter by passing an ordinance that the trees lining main street would not be cut down without the majority vote of the citizens of Sophia. During the election campaign over the past two months, Mayor Porter said it was rumored that a candidate ·had said if he was elected the trees would be cut down and the area paved for additional parking. In other action the Council voted to ask the town's attorney, attorney, David Kennedy, to seek action against the Friendship Baptist C h u r c h which reportedly has fenced a right-of- way near the church property. At the May Council meeting the administration h a d s e r v e d notice that the fence be removed. removed. Council announced that "no parking" signs will be erected on the left side of Summit Street near the American Legion Hall. The Council also approved the purchase of a new portable pump for the town's sewer plant. Ballots in the June 3 election were ratified and announcemen made that the new officials wil be sworn into office one wee] prior to July 1. Newly elected officials are Howard Walker, mayor; D. R Rinehart, recorder, and Coun cilmen. William Benfield, Tom Gillespie, James Polk, Johnnj Milano and Roland Hatfield Milano, Hatfield and Rinehart had held the posts as cotm cilmen the past two years and Walker served as recorder. Announcement also was made of the election of new officer^ for the Sophia Volunteer Fire Department. Baxter Houck will continue as fire chief. Others are Sammie Gillenwater, first assistant; Wesley Porter, second assis- :ant; Linden Houck, captain: Robert Porter Jr., f i r si lieutenant; Ray Saunders, second second lieutenant and secretary. Serving on the board of directors will be Henry Roles of Midway, out-of-town citizen; Mayor Robert Porter, Sophia citizens; Raymond Polk and Johnny Milano, councilmen, and Gillenwater and Arnold Bishop, representing the fire department. department.
