7 Sept 1959 Daily Ind Jnl Goddess Race Result - Santa Cruz - Sonata Leads Fast Santa Cruz Fleet By ALFRED...
Sonata Leads Fast Santa Cruz Fleet By ALFRED MATSON With a generous portion of that go-fast ingredient, wind, the 37 yachts participating in the annual Santa Cruz Race flew down the coast to cross the finish line in record breaking breaking time Saturday. That is, all save one. The Kookoobura. a Bird class sloop, owned by Firman Voorhies of the Santa Cruz Y.C., became a cropper with a broken mast just outside the Golden Gate. Douglas O’Hair’s new Lapworth-designed Lapworth-designed Sonata definitely definitely proved her capabilities in the heavy going by winning the race on a corrected time of 8:42:10. As to be expected, the Orient, Tim Mosely’s 63-foot cutter, was the first to finish in the chilly pre-dawn at 3:55, but because of burdensome handicaps finished eighth in the official standings. TWO DIVISIONS Although the boats all hit the starting line at the same time. 6 p.m. Friday, they were racing, racing, and for the first time, in two divisions. A and B. The Sonata was winner in division A and the over-all, with the best corrected time, as well. The Farallon Clipper Echo, with Dr. Glen Harmon in command, command, took first place honors in B division and missed the over-all crown by a mere two minutes flat. And the other Farallon entry, Aldo Alessio’s Mistress II, was in close contention contention all the way, to finish second, just 3 minutes, 41 seconds seconds later. It was a ding dong battle from start to finish with better than half of the yachts finishing finishing within the hour after the Orient. Even the also-rans | were secured and anchored in time for a mid-morning brunch. The results: CLASS A Elapsed Cor.
