Midland NC railroad, Marley's Mills - The Midland Survey. The survey of the Midland...
The Midland Survey. The survey of the Midland North Carolina Railroad is nearly finished. Col. Gardner's "party have survey ed one hundred miles of the routefrom Goldsboro .to Marley's Mills, twenty-three twenty-three twenty-three miles west of this place, and Capt. Cain's party are surveying from Salisbury in this direction and will probably ' complete their task this week. Col. Gardner with his corps of surveyors, after leaving here 'last week, followed the course of the old fciage road in the direction of Ashe-boro, Ashe-boro, Ashe-boro, but he goon ascertained that this route would be too costly, so after arriving at Marley's rrujls (just in the edge of Randolph county) he started wpon his return to this place, running a new line on the northern side of Hickory Mountain, and arrived here last night. This line runs about half a mile north of Matthews X Roads, crosses Rocky river a mile north of Hackney's mill and passes within a few yards of Emmaus church, and is pronoanced by Col. Gardner to be an .excellent route, on which theie would not anywhere be a cut deeper than ten feet. This line completely "flanks" Hickory Mountain, nd is no longer in distance than the did sf ige road that runs right oyer that elevation. Col. Gardner and his assistant engineer, engineer, Mr. R. J. Latta, will remain ere a few days engaged , in making np their estimates, after whch they will wait until about the first of September September before beginning t j locate the the route upon which the road will be constructed. Mr. Best informed fcs, a month ago, that he would build the road and have the cars running from Salisbury to Goldsboro in less Ihnn eighteen months. We sincerely hope that he may not be disappoint- disappoint-
