NEW FRANKLIN, Mo., Aug. 24 (/P)—A convict who had jumped 'Us parole was arrested .early today after a. 26-year-old farmer was killed and his mother badly beaten at their ;home. Officers said the convict admitted .firing a shotgun blast that killed Wllmer D. Perkins, living about 4 V4 miles north of here, atod breaking a pop bottle over the head of his mother, Mrs. .Flossie Perkins, 50. The convict, who had been on parole for nearly 3.years, is Garland "&. Phillips, 49, arrested at Sedalia as he was fleeing in A car belonging to the Perkins family.. • Officers who, questioned Phillips and Mrs. Perkins said the convict,, who had broken his parols and was hiding out, was waiting at the Perkins home when the farmer and his mother returned horns Sunday night from attending a movie at Fayette. Perkins' body was found in the garage, buckshot Wounds in' the chest v and stomath. , 4 •Mrs. Perkins suffered a concussion from a.blow on the head with a pop bottle and body- bruises. Physicians at Lee-hospital in Fayette said she had oeen criminally assaulted. . Mrs. Perkins made her way to the home of a neighbor, Garrett Innes, who lives- about a half a mile away, to report the attach. This was about s':30 a.m., about six hours after the shooting. Phillips was caught at Sedalia by Trooper Robert, Stockdel and Jack Gouts, night chief of police. The officers said Phillips admitted the shooting, saying he thought Perkins was reaching for something to.hit him with when he ordered the. man and his mother out of the car. Sheriff Delgard Wells of Howard County later took Phillips to Fayette. He said the prisoner had denied to him 'that he criminally assaulted the woman. - Phillips had been on parole to the family of Rep. and 1 Mrs. Bernard v Simcoe In Callaway County since' 1956.
