| j . miles. M. C. Staves, cf Des Moines, has received received a copy of "Freedom," the soldier soldier paper published at Manila, from his son, with the fifty-first Iowa regiment. regiment. Mr. Staves writes that the regiment expects to leave Manila for the United States about. September 1, and to reach Iowa about the 1st. of November, some time being consumed at San Francisco. With the copy of the newspaper was sent a small Filipino Filipino flag captured by young Staves from a Filipino hut which wase.aptur- ed by the Iowa soldiers, and in which were found a dozen dead Filipinos. The flag is spotted with Filipino blood. The copy of "Freedom" was published July 4, and contains many items of soldier news. The force employed by the Santa Fe in surveying an extension of the Fort
