It seems that this gentleman [Obtained a pair of Australian whales after two years of "fishing" off the Australian coast in an effort to pluck ones The beasts, each about 35 long, where shipped to San Francisco in 1873 (so the story goes) in tanks built for them. Fifty tanks of sea water accompanied the whales on their overland trip to insure plentiful supplies of their natural element. Mr. Wickham came from London to oversee the "plan- from the ting" of his leviathan pets, selecting a small bay near mouth of the Bear River that was connected with the main water by a shallow strait a mile wide.
