Andy Falls, high school golf, Apr 1974 - Still Swinging Coach C.D. Kirchner and his...
Still Swinging Coach C.D. Kirchner and his District 32-AAAA champion Ram golfers are doing daily duty here, using the facilities of the San Felipe Country Club and Laughlin golf layouts. The Del Rio coach said he has six boys eligible for the trip to Corpus Christi and the regional meet a week after this one. He will work with Rusty Chalk, Chago Baker, Andy Falls, Craig Cates and Acton Brumley, the regular varsity quintet and with Steve Emmons who surprised everybody but himself by carding the second medalist honors to Chalk to earn a trip slot. Kirchner said he can come up with five boys from the six qualified lads to form the regional quintet or he can use the regular five and let Emmons shoot for only medalist honors. The format at the region meet permits a school to name a team and take the best four scores of the five players each day toward the official tournament total. Kirchner said that Baker, Chalk and Cates have had some real fine rounds and were they to get it together on tourney days, the Rams, with normal games from one of the other two or three players could have a real run at regional honors. At the moment Emmons has the chore of showing Coach Kirchner that he (Steve) is not just a one-day wonder and must prove his consistency. Were he to really get his game m line over the next two weeks, he could possibly be the fifth player on the starting quintet and enhance the Rams' chances. Also, by the mere token that Emmons has possibilities, the other two players, Falls and Brumley, are bound to concentrate more on their games and whittle off a stroke here or there getting ready. When the Rams visit Corpus they'll be competing in the quarter portion of Texas regionals with eight other district champs and runnersup. The Del Rioans are champions of the triangle district which includes San Antonio-Eagle Pass and our Queen City. The folks going to Corpus includes the elite schoolboy golfers from a line above Austin down to one below Houston over here to Del Rio and down to Brownsville. There's some 90 boys set to compete in the regional golf meet and each comes from a district champion or loop runnerup school. Coach Kirchner and his Ram linksters have confidence in their opportunities at the region meet; "The ability is there," mused the coach, "if we can get it all together over the two days of action at Corpus." in and nine in
