Andy Falls, high school golf, Apr 1974 - 10A-DEL RIO (TEXAS) NEWS-HERALD, Sunday. April...
10A-DEL RIO (TEXAS) NEWS-HERALD, Sunday. April 21,1974 Regional Ends Rams' Rainbow CORPUS CHRISTI-Del Rio High School's track and field trio and the Rams' six man links squad found the Region IV meets most distasteful here over Friday and Saturday. Both thinclad coach Walter Levermann and golf coach C. D. Kirchner looked on almost in disbelief as none of the Queen City competitors failed to survive the regional cut for coveted berths in the upcoming Texas UIL state finals. Levermann admitted to feeling "bad" and "almost as disappointed" as his ace discus man Tom Caldwell when the senior thinclad, who set a new school record of 167' 10" and was over 162-feet three times this year, could not get it together at Buccaneer Stadium here for more than 155' 9" and sixth place among the field. "Tom took a casual warmup toss and sailed the disk around 165 or 166 feet and I felt he was going to have one of his regular good days. Then on his second official toss he threw that 155' 9" but on his next four trys he just couldn't master the wind. We both felt badly because we know he's a better discus man than his efforts here showed," the veteran coach said. Levermann also said that Bobby Wallen, his junior class pole vaulter, found the air in Buccaneer Stadium too salty and cleared just 11' 6" after beating that mark by a foot this spring. On his intermediate hurdler, Dan Erickson, the coach commented, "It just wasn't his day either. Erickson ran a 41.7 clocking and failed to qualify for the finals. He has turned in 41.2 this year. Either this area has a jinx for us when we qualify at our district meet or we let ourselves get psyched out. The boys trained and worked hard, were in bed early the night before the competition and we all thought we'd reach the peak we had \ Flyers Blank Rangers PHILADELPHIA CAP) - A first period goal by Rick MacL* elsh and two by Ross Lonsber* ry and Bill Barber within 52 seconds of the second period carried the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-0 victory over the New York Rangers Saturday night in the first game of the Nation* al Hockey League Stanley Cup semifinal series. With Bernie Parent in the net, the Flyers stifled the Rangers' big guns with the same type of tough defense that carried them to a four-game quarterfinal sweep of the At* lanta Flames. New York, fresh from its eli* mination of the defending Stan* ley Cup champion Montreal in six games, appeared flat in taking planned over the weekend. We just didn't make the grade and I feel kind of bad for Caldwell and Erickson, the two seniors. Wallen still has next season to compete." C. D. Kirchner, Ram golf coach was as surprised as could be in reporting that Acton Brumley, the alternate on the varsity team turned in rounds of 78 and 82 and his No. 4 player, Andy Falls equalled that total with rounds of 80-80. The regular big three of the varsity foursome followed with Rusty Chalk at 85-80; Craig Cates with 87-80 arid Chago Baker at 89-78 giving the team 12th place on the computed score of 652. Steve Emmons who was the District 32-AAAA runnerup behind teammate Chalk, shot 89-82 as a soloist. "We just did not have it over the Pharoah and Corpus Christ! Country Club courses. It is either the prevailing winds or air, or whatever, but the Texas Coast does something to us," Kirchner opinioned Saturday night. Derby Is Well By CARL GUYS
