The fans will get a chance to see the No. 1 ranked college COLLEGE POLL Sam Houston Stays No. 1 division team in the nation, a squad that has won 29 straight games, the Ix>ne Star Conference leader and the team that bills itself as the tallest college squad in the nation. Sam Houston State currently holds all of these claims. The Bearkats are No. 1 in all of the major college division polls and have held the position since whipping Stephen F. Austin State, then rated on top, in mid-season. The Bearkats have taken 2.'i consecutive victories this season, and won their final six last year. starting forward. By CARL(;UYS News-Herald Staff Del Rio High School's head track coach Walter Levermann announced a squad of 19 for the Rams initial participation in 1973 track and field meets. The 19-member troupj? will leave the Queen City at' 7 a.m. Friday with Coach Levermann and Coaches Ramiro Garza and John Kallinger, Manager Billie Rippy and Trainer Jim Cottle and will spend Friday night in the Silver Saddle Lodge in Fort' Stockton. The Comanche Relays, one of the better meets in the state, will pit approximately 18 Class AAAA schools against each other including the Odessa, Big Spring, El Paso, San Angelo, New Mexico, and 1 Del Rio area squads. l/pvermann, thp veteran track coach here, named Mike Bogardts and John Spears, two new members to the event, to team with returnees David Jarman and Leon Best for the (tarn 440-yard relay team. In the solo events returnees Kueben Gon/.ales and Pete Orr will run the half mile; but three new boys, Mike Gonzalez, Jesse Hernandez and Andy Falls will try the mile. Quarter-milprs for the (x)manche event are veterans Joe Carranza arid Tony Bolner with newcomer, Andy Falls. Sprinters for the century dash are three veterans, David Jarrnan, Leon Best and Jerry Fay and for the fulong heat are Jarman, new this year to the event; veteran Best and newcomer Mike Sadler. Thr - 120-bigh- hurdlers an? both back from 1972, John Spears and Tony Bolner who were successful intermediate hurdlers last season. They will tram with newcomer Dan Rrlckson over the 330-yard timbers where Spears holds the school and district marks. Spears is the sole pole vaulter but a good one with a 13-6 school mark and last year's District 32-AAAA championship under his belt. Only in the high jump event will the Del Rioans lack a representative since Coach I/evermann states, "No one is really ready for that event yet." In the shot put Stephen Quinones is back rrom last year and has Jerry Cervantez to back him up. Cervantez will also toss the discus with Tom Caldwell of the '72 squad. In the long jump Spears and Hrickson carries the Ram hopes completing the 19-athlete troupe. Only Fay and David Simpson are ailing. Fay has a slight, ankle problem and will be held out of the 440-yard rleay event along with Simpson who has a pulled muscle and will not compete this weekend. Fay will be used as the third Kam entry in the 100-yard dash but won't be called to press if his "ankle acts up," hinted Coach Levermann. Del Rio's JV track and field squad, scheduled to open the season Friday at Carrizo Springs, were notified that that meet was called off due to track conditions and will be re-set later. Peewee Brass Meets Tonight Pablo Rodriguez, president of the Val Verde County Peewee Football League, announced a meeting for all officers and directors to be held in the Travel Lodge restauraru}.tonight at 7;30. Rodriguez said that a financial report will be given and a new project to raise funds will be discussed besides planning for the 1973 season.
