RUNAWAY ON THE CENTRAL. Yesterday morning, about 10:30 o'clock, an engine and fifteen cars started down the very steep incline from the Maffet breaker of the Pitts - ton Coal and Iron company. No sooner did the train get fairly started until the locomotive made several bursts of speed and started on a mad clip down the plane - The crew knew at once that the engine was beyond control and the brakemen began to jump to save themselves. Engineer Rouse Hoover and his fireman, George Kreidler, stood at their posts doing all In their power to bring the iron monster under control. About a quarter of a mile down the plane is a curve, and both men knew that unless speed was slackened the engine would surely leave the tracks at that point. When a few hundred yards from the curve the fireman saw that the speed was increasing Instead of decreasing and began to creep over the cars, an act! which saved him from Instant death. In rounding the curve the engine jumped the track and carried carried all the cars with it. Help was soon on hand and much difficulty was experienced in extricating the body of Hoover from beneath the overturned engine. , Deceased was a prominent resident of Ashley and is survived by a wife and one daughter, Mrs. Charles Keck, wife of Attorney Keck.
