MOUNT CARMEL, PA.. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10. 1918 11 en-1 A great honor lias come to Mount Carmel. One of our town soldier boys', Walter A. Shaman-j Shaman-j Shaman-j ski, has been awarded the Distinguished Distinguished Service Cross for a re- re- Town Soldier Wins Great Army Honor markable deed or heroism performed performed in battle in France. The official citation by the War Department reads: "At Vaux, July 1, 1918, having entered a cellar to install his telephone, he was attacked by eleven of the enemy. He killed two and took nine prisoners." No further particulars have been received here, and. nothing more is known of this valorous act. But in the few words given above the War Department tells a wonderful story, and A. Shamanski, Mount Soldier, has been given a place in history. In all probability Shamanski himself is now a prisoner of war in Germany. The citation for bravery mentions that his great act was performed on July 1st. The official casualty list published by the War Department on August August 12 th stated that Walter A. Shamanski, of Mount Carmel was "missing in action." That means that he was likely captured captured by the enemy, the action occurring occurring on July 18th. No word from him has been received by ! He was educated in the schools connected with Our Mother of Consolation church, and in the public schools of Mount Carmel borough. On June 19, 1917, he enlisted in the Army, ' in Company K., Twenty-third Twenty-third Twenty-third United States Infantry. The young man left the mines to enlist in the Service. In the last letter the family received from him he stated that he was engaged in telephone and elec- elec- advanced
