Postmaster Inman retires SAN BERNARDINO James H. Inman. San Bernardino postmaster and regional center manager, retired Friday after 37 years with the postal service. His plans, he said, include working on a home he owns in Oak Creek, Ariz., and finding out what lies at the end of a gravel road headed by a sign that says, "Dewey 6 miles." Inman, 55, and his wife, Doris, were born a few months apart at Sequioa Hospital, which used to be at 5th and D streets. Inman's great-grandfather, great-grandfather, great-grandfather, John Tempest Leffen, came to San Bernardino In 1851, the year before the Mormons founded the city. His father, Willis, was a mail carrier in the system Inman later headed. Inman's first Job at the post office was as a temporary temporary employee during the 1942 Christmas rush. The following June he graduated from San Bernardino High School, and In July became a permanent postal employee. Later that year he was called to service with the U.S. Army in the Phillipines. Following his discharge in 1946 he returned to the post office. Inman became assistant mail superintendent in 1961, and in 1966 was promoted to full superintendent by Jack K. Lewis, then postmaster. Inman later became became director of customer service. When Lewis retired retired in 1978 after 42 years of service, Inman was named to succeed him. As sectional center manager, Inman headed a system system of 75 post offices with nearly 2,000 employees. During his 21 years In office, he said, 25 postmasters retired and new postmasters were appointed, and 44 employees In the San Bernardino headquarters received received promotions. A new postmaster for San Bernardino w ill be named later this month, postal officials said. a James Inman . . . retiring
