Bortner Victorious In District Tourney NEFFSVILLE Jan Bortner, York High's smooth-stroking smooth-stroking smooth-stroking tennis ace, captured the District 3 PIAA Singles championship Monday afternoon by sweeping to a pair of impressive victories at the Manheim Township High school court. Bortner, seeded number one, who had advanced to the' semifinals during tourney action : last week, stopped fourth-seeded fourth-seeded fourth-seeded Drew Hostetter of Donegal, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, in the semifinals Monday and then came back to rout Tom Sweitzer of Manheim Central, ranked third, by 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, 6-0. 6-0. 6-0. Sweitzer eliminated second-seeded second-seeded second-seeded Tim Smith of Hershey in the other half of the semifinals Monday, 9-7, 9-7, 9-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, as all four of the seeded players advanced to the round of four. It was the 14th schoolboy victory without a loss this season for Bortner, a senior, who thus qualifies for the State PIAA championship tournament May 21-22 21-22 21-22 at Penn State University. Bortner lost only eight games in five rounds of competition in the District event. Monday's play cleared the decks for the District 3 PIAA Doubles tourney which starts today at 1 p.m. on the Manheim Township and Warwick High school courts. York High, West York and York Suburban will each have one team in the event. Representing York High will be Mark Mitzell and Bill Adams, who draw a first-round first-round first-round bye. West York's duo of Jerry Beck and Steve Trimmer will oppose Bill Hoeffel and Reese of Manehim Central in the first round, and the K JAN BORTNER winner will take on Mitzell and Adams in the second round. Roger Calabretta and Tom Ogden of York Suburban will face Dave Moyer and Kramer of Fleetwood in their first-round first-round first-round test. Play will advance to the semifinals today, and the semifinals and finals are listed for Wednesday, starting at 1 p.m. .
