Tribute to James M Kirkham's wife - at mission no By BETTY BRAIJVERD JAMES M....
at mission no By BETTY BRAIJVERD JAMES M. KIRKHAM started out peddling as a youngster. H 0 finally drifted into the mercantile business. When the local paper where he lived at Leigh, Utah, .wasn't accomplishing the results t),e advertisers thought they should have according to the money they were spending, at Mr. Kirkham's instigation, the s tore with which he was connected bought the newspaper. He familiarized himself with every department of the newspaper office. For twelve years he owned and published the UtahFarmer About two ago he sold his newspaper tu The Desert News, Suit Lake City, ard he is assistant manager. Although Mr. Kirkham is one of a million newspaper men he i s one in a million. He dislikes publicity of any kind but his dislike was overruled by his indebtedness to his wife, which he gladly acknowledged to me . "My wife j s a most unusual woman," said Mr. Kirkhiim. "We have been married for thirty years and Khe has never lost her temper. That doesn't mean that she hasn't had a chance to do so. She has an even temper and never loses her head. She has red hair but in her case the characteristics usually attributed to a red-headed person do not f i t . "No man can make any great success without a good helpmate who bncks her husband up in his work encourages him. And that ii what my wife has done. "She says that what I've learned is by the mistakes I've made and she has been most helpful in warning me aeainst making mistakes. "Mrs. Kirkham is the mother of nine children. She has raised the family while I made the living. She provides something for the children to do to interest them rather than let them seek their own interests or tell them they can't do this or that. "For seventeen years she has been the organist in our Mormon Church and has always taken an active part in musical, literary and church clubs. She has encouraged our children along musical lines so that all of them sing, as well as play various instruments such as the piano.cornct, clarinet, saxophone, slide trombone, cello and violin. 'She lives for our children and she has brought up a family that anyone would be proud of. ·
