in - hands to side - bar buggies were there in numbers and a host of people went down by train Unusually good refreshments were served and everybody seemed to know everybody else so that an air of delightful delightful informality and jollity pervaded the precincts of Burlingame The country places near town are filling UP rapidly San Mateo Burlingame and Jlenlo Park are evidently in for a gay spring and early summer season All the places are owned by rich men who while they all do not go in for polo and ronv races or coaching lead lives of leisurely enjoyment The Burlingame Club seems to be the favorite place to meet on Saturdays Saturdays and Sundays There are always several several iuncbebns or dinners given there on those days and na a great many men eo down between Friday and Monday and the country honses are generally tilled with house parties there are all the essentials essentials to what society deems a good time Most of the owners of rural bouse are already already occupying them Among some of the prominent people who will summer in their own houses at San Mateo or Burlingame Burlingame are Mrs Parrott Mr and Mrs John Parrott Mr and Mrs C de Gnigne Captain and Mrs A H Parson Mr and Mrs Frea Moody Mr and Mrs A Y Rose Mr and Mrs W H Crocker Joseph Joseph D Grant Mr and Mrs F 8 Douty Mr and Mrs V H Howard Mr and Mrs C August Spreckels Mrs and Miss Kohl Mr and Mrs A Page Brown Mrs Tobin and her two daughters Mr and Mrs James S Tobin who will have Miss Irwin of Chicago with them Mrs Cas - serly J B Casserly Miss - Casserly Mr and Mrs Henry T Scott Mr and Mrs A B Ford Mr and Mrs H R Judah Mr and Mrs Bcrel and many others Polo has been the great excitement at Burlingame this week and in spite of the supposed hard times there seem to be plenty of young men who are devoting themselves to this favorite sport The Tobins Howards Major Ruthbone John Lawson Harry Simpkins and a number of others have all taken a great deal of interest interest in the game Of all the summer months June is the favorite with people wbo have country places near the city They go to them in April but until June there it very little entertaining entertaining done excepting Saturday and Sunday again be played on the courts of the Hotel Rafael unless those in favor of Del Monte should gain their point Among some of the people wbo will spend the summer at the Hotel Rafael are Mr and Mrs J J Crooks Mrs Crooks and her mother Mrs J L Case left for the East on Thursday Thursday but will return in time to occupy her rooms at the Rafael on May 1st Mr and Mrs R H Follis have taken the Hollo - way cottage for the seaton Mr and Mrs J J Mack will occupy one of the cottages Baron and Baroness von Schroeder are due at San Rafael about the middle of June and will be at the Rafael ail summer summer Others expected at San Rafael are Mr and Mrs John Boggs Miss Bogss Fred Boggs Mrs M B M Toland Mr and Mrs M Greenebanm Mr and Mrs D B Davidson R R Knighton Mr and Mrs J J Moore and son Mrs R F Morrison Mrs Miller Mrs Charles R Detrick and family Mr and Mrs Rosenstock Mr and Mrs J R K Nuttall Mrs Henry Schmieden E G Schmieden Mr and Mrs William Haas Mr and Mrs George D Greenwood and family Mrs Byron G Crane Miss Crane Mr and Mrs L R Larzelere Mrs N Behrens Mr and Mrs Brandenstein and family Mrs Crosbr John Perry Jr Miss Kimber Mr and Mrs John F Bigelow Miss KelWg 8 Kellogg Mrs L C Redington fl W Redlngton F A Greenwood George Hooper Mr and Mrs F M Smith Mr and Mrs A J Glenn and family Mr and Mrs George E Raum and many others The guests at the Vendome in San Jose find that the management has made many improvements in the past months notably the repainting of the building both within and without The outside is now a light color which contrasts well with the beautiful beautiful lawns which never looked more inviting inviting than now Several ot the leading members of the Scheel Orchestra have been engaged for the summer The tennis tennis courts Ave in number are receiving the finishing touches and before long ttiey will be crowded as before Daring the past few months several parties of excursionists excursionists have visited the Vendome and in a few days a large excursion party under the auspices of the Pennsylvania road is scheduled to arrive Among those now at the hotel or soon to arrive are Mrs J Winshin Mr and Mrs C A Winship J M Williams and family Mrs J R Walkr Jr Miss Marguerite Walker Mr andMrs Witcber Jones Mr and Mrs A J de Guerre Dr and Mrs C A Way -
