, Mortician Pendergraff Cited Mack L. Pendergraf f Jr., manager of Strode- Armstrong Mortuary, has been recognized for his 50 years as a licensed mortician by the Texas Funeral Directors Association. He was honored recently during the 91st annual convention and educational exhibit held by the association in San Antonio earlier this month. A graduate of Prairie View College, Pendergraff the Hampton Training School of Embalmers and Hunts' Business Institute. He passed the state board of embalming examination in 1926 and began his career working for Hogan and Davis Funeral Home in. Brenham. "There were no black embalmers within a hundred miles so we were kept very busy," he recalls. There were no preparation rooms like the ones we have in funeral homes today, so all our embalming was done in the homes and mostly by lamplight." . After six years with the Brenham funeral home, Pendergraff started embalming for other funeral homes in the area.. , In 1940, he attended a funeral directors' convention in Galveston. "I visited Strode Funeral Home, which had just been built, and it was so modern and beautiful, I left my application for a position," he said.
