AT LIM GALLERY Kxhlbitiun o£ Works by Kiowa Students at University of Oklahoma Is Sliown Here. The Joplin Art League announces a unique and interesting exhibition of thirty-five water color paintings illustrative of Indian life in all its varied and picturesque phases. The gallery is now open to the public each afternoon at 3 until November 14. A tea will be given to the league members and to those interested, from Joplin and surrounding towns, Wednesday afternoon in the little gallery at the public library. The paintings being s'.iown are surprisingly well done by a group of youthful Kiowa Indians, who are working daily in the studios of the college of fine arts of the University of Oklahoma. Professor Oscar B. Jacobson, director of the school of painting and design at the university, tells the story of the spec- ,tacular rise to prominence of the young Indian artists, who emerging from the obscurity of a lonely Indian reservation and exchanging tomahawks for paint brushes, have won for themselves a recognition as outstanding contributors to the art of America. The quartet, whose names are Steve Mopope, Monroe Tsatake, Spencer Asah and Jack Hokeah, came from the Kiowa reservation near Anadarko, Okla., bringing, with them a Kiowa girl, Bon-ge-tah Smokey, which, translated, means "Coming of the Dawn." Their instruction was made possible by a philanthropist, L. H. Wentz of Ponca City, Okla., known as "Oklahoma's Uncle Lou." It was found that though they all had great possibilities, they needed instruction and technique. They have had some education, though this influence is not seen in their paintings. The subject matter and inspirations are their own. They use no models, but draw from the memory of what they have seen and heard at the firesides and in the tepees of their camps. The exhibition is being shown
