Mojave faults PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Pictures from U.S. and French spacecraft revealed several previously unknown earthquake faults in Califor- nia's Mojave Desert, NASA said Tuesday. The faults, many of which are located near Barstow within the Army's Fort Irwin, are part of a system of faults that produced a magnitude- 7.5 quake on June 28 at Landers, the space agency said. That quake and the magnitude-6.6 Big Bear quake a few hours later, killed a child, injured more than 400 people and caused at least $93 million in damage. Many of the more than 25,000 aftershocks since those quakes have been centered in the Barstow-Fort Irwin area, dozens of miles north of the big quakes' epicenters. Scientists have said they believe the area is riddled with faults and likely to experience strong quakes sometime in the future.
