His father, Daniel Kelly, was a watchmaker and jeweler, and he had left ills tools for his son. There were four children, thtee girls and W. D. He loved the memory of his father and doteriulned to follow the same occupation when old enough to learn It. When he was about thirteen lie apprenticed himself to IMchards & Dubosq, Jewelers, in Philadelphia. He wasj diligent during business hours, but he had acquired a great taste for reading while he served in the printing oflioe. and he UBed IiIh evenings for future usefulness by reading the "xoutu's literary uoni - panv.1' He toon became a promi nent member of this association and was seleoted to deliver addresses as a means of advertising the library. When he had served his seven years apprenticeship, and stood ftrth a free man at the age of twenty, it was in the year 1884.
