Defenders Of Shanghai ·"···/ Improve Their Position ··'?/ Gains After Defeat* Battle Of Hangchow Will Determine Whether Cantonese Armies Will March To Gates Of Shanghai, Is Belief. Shanghai, Feb. 7--(INS)--General Sun Chuan Fang's armies arc making a determined stand before Hangchow According to dispatches received here. The reverses which they met at Ycnchow arc have been offset by slight gains and the position the defenders of Shanghai is improved. Military experts here believe that the issue battle for Hangchow will determine whether the Cantonese armies will march to the gates of Shanghai. The repeated assurances of Eugene Chen that Cantonese do not intend to occupy Shanghai, cause any disturbances there, arc being^ relied here by most of the foreigners and it is generally understood that it is the opinion of the consular that there is no danger to the International Settle/-' ment unless mobs of Chinese get far beyond the r trol of their leaders. · " · · . - ' . ;
