Shafter dated 9:54 a m, today: Action is now going on but the firing is light and desultory. It was begun on the right, near Caney, by Lawton's Division. Will move on the northeast part of the town Santiago Will keep you continually advised of the progress. To Be The Objective Point. ADMIRAL SAMPSON'S Engaged With the Land Forces. Playa Del Este, 11:20 a. m,—A general assault on Santiago by the land and sea forces of the United States began this morning. The Vesuvius used dynamite guns with good effect. Hard fighting is in progress With the U, S. Army five miles^east of Santiago, June 30, Noon— The town of Caney, which commands the land entrance into Santiago, lies close to the American right wing'and probably will be taken without difficulty soon, as it is held by only a small guard of Spanish troops. American scouting parties have been within a thousand yards of Caney without being attacked, and the roads in that vicinity have been repaired and improved by our troops. It. is believed the investment of Santiago will follow the capture of Oaney. About five thousand Cubans are operating with the American Army at the front, and the Spanish force defending Santiago is estimated at from twelve thousand to twenty thousand men. Confident of an Early Attack. In addition General Pando is marching from Manzanillo, with about 8,000 men, and ought to reach Santiago in a few days unless checked by the small force of Cubans now holding mountain passes. American camps have been soaked by recent rains and the roads are in bad condition,, but officers and men are confident they will be able to make a general attack soon. Off Juragua, June 30, 7 p. m.—The advance tomorrow will be made'by General Lawton's Division, forming the right wing, and if the Spaniards show signs of retreating, or circumstances otherwise warrant it, General Wheeler's Division and General Kent's Division, doubtless will join in the advance, endeavor to drive the Spaniards before.-them and enter "the city. While the movement may not reach this extent tomorrow its purpose is to force the five thousand men of General Lawton's command two miles further forward than they are now. take the little village of Caney and occupy the ridge overlooking the city and the harbor from which our artillery fire can be rained upon the Spanish entrenchments in front of the city and upon the large body of Spanish soldiers hold ing them. It is believed that at the same time General Lawton advances, General Kent's Division on the left, will attack Agua- dores on the coast four miles east of Morro Castle, which would give our army a base;'much nearer Santiago than the present one at Juragua. Until today our men at the front have been subsisting on half rations, but supplies have been sent to the front by pack trains with great dispatch, all of today and night, and the soldiers COMING Washington, July 1.--A dispatch read in Cabinet meeting from Col. Allen, in charge of the Signal Station at Playa Del Este, said, that eight Americans and nine Cubans had been wounded, and that Admiral Sampson's Fleet is hotly engaged. Madrid-4 dispatch to the Imparcial, from Santiago de Cuba, says four American warships bombarded Manzanillo at 4 this morning and retired with one vessel seriously injured. Washington July 1.-A rumor was in circulation here nis afternoon that Santiago had been captured but at 2:45 p. m. Gen. Corbin said that no dispatches here bear out the rumor.
