He served in the U.S. Navy during World War I and was a member of the first radio expedition in Alaska during that war. He also served in World Warll. A note of human interest was the fact that during the Viet Nam conflict, while he was attending a college art class, he found it necessary to drop the class. He was informed at this time, at the age of 68, that because of his sudden withdrawal from school, he was now eligible for the draft. The story received world-wide publicity. Mr. Sperry retired from the Southern California Gas Company in "1963, and has produced a large collection of scenery art work which has been displayed in art shows in Arizona. His LDS Church activities , include ward clerk, assistant stake clerk and director of the High Priest's Store while living in California. He was also in the branch presidency in Sun City, Arizona. Iva M. Steers Sperry is the daughter of Peter A. and Lucy Nixon Steers and was born in Idaho Falls, Ida. In high school she received national recognition in the fields of debate and oratorical speaking, and played lead roles in theater and opera. After graduating from college she taught school in Ogden and later worked as chief labor accountant for the Denver Rio Grande Railroad. During this time the economy was dropping and the office where she worked in Ogden YOUR SEWING HOT LINE closed down. She was transferred to Salt Lake City to a railroad job, and exercised her union seniority to bump Vernon off his job. This was the story of their meeting. When Mr. Sperry enlisted in World War II, the couple moved to California where Mrs. Sperry was employed in the Internal Revenue Service as an income tax auditor. The couple are both of pioneer heritage, some of whom came to Utah with the handcart company. Mr. Sperry's maternal grandfather was Hosea Stout, colonel in the Nauvoo Legion, Brigham Young's bodyguard, and attorney general of the proposed State of Deseret. He was also first attorney general of the territory of Utah, appointed to that office by President Abraham Lincoln.
