Newville Native Who Was Cowboy, Sheriff, Dies In Illinois Word has been received of the recent passing of Henry Wise in Mount Carroll, Ill., where he has resided for many years. Mr. Wise was born in Newville on Dec. 18, 1861, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Wise, and moved to Mount Carroll about 1880. He was the oldest resident of that community at the time of his passing. The Newville native died at the home of his son and daughter in law, Mr. and Mrs. Wise. He had' been in failing health for several weeks. He was married on Mar. 4, 1888 to Ida May Feezer of Mount Carroll. Mrs. Wise died on Oct. 14, 1934. Mr. Wise, in company with many other young men from Newville who went west in the latter part of the 19th century, led a colorful and adventurous life. Before his marriage he worked a while in California and was a cowpuncher in 1883 and 1884 in Texas. Twice his home was destroyed by cyclones. However, following his marriage he became occupied in the more tranquil life of a farmer until 1917. The couple occupied the sheriff's quarters in the court house of Mount Carroll from 1918 to 1930 while he served two terms as sheriff of Carroll county and one term as chief deputy. He is survived by three sons, Glen of Brooklyn, N. Y.; Lloyd of Buena Park, Calif., and Harry of Mount Carroll. Also, a daughter, Mrs. Charles G. (Luvia) Schreiner of Mount Carroll; ten grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the First Methodist church with Rev. John J. Main officiating. Burial was in the Oak Hill cemetery there.
