Scranton's "Grand Old Man,' oldest native son of the citv. dean of the local bar. historian of note and father of the movement that resulted in creation of Lackawanna county in the seventies. died at Hahnemann hospital at a few minutes past S o'clock this morning. Mr. Merrifield was in his eighty -seventh year. The end came acefully. For several months Mr. Merritield had suffered from the infrmities of old age. He was able to be about his room in the Hotel Holland until about a week ago. Two days ago his condition became such as 10 prompt his removal to the hospital. He showed signs of improvement for a few hours, then fell Into a sleep that gradually brought his long; eventful career as a lawyer and itizen to a close. Mrs. Merrifield was in her apartments at the Holland when the end came. Frank Merrifleld, a nephew. and . his wife, were at the bedside during the final moments of the: old gentleman. Mr. Morrifield's only other survivors are al. nephew. Robert Merrifieldl. of Philadelphia, and an adopted daughter, Mrs. Jessie Blackwood, wife of John H.., Blackwood, of Los Angeles. Cal.
