Q-C Angel arms key sweep By Steve Tappa Staff sports writer A four-hurler firing squad took aim at the Rockford Expos Wednesday and bagged the Quad-City Angels a twinbill victory and a fourway tie for first-place in the Midwest League's Southern Division. Starters Roberto Castillo and Erik Bennett teamed up with relievers Mike Hook and John Marchese to out-gun Rockford 4-2 and 3-2 in front of 3,257 fans at John O'Donnell Stadium. The Halos, winners of four of their last five and nine of their last 14, improve to 39-35. The twinbill sweep moves QC into a tie with Clinton, Waterloo and Cedar Rapids, all 4-1 in the second-half race. "I don't know if we're going to win this thing or not, but we sure are playing this game better than we were a couple weeks back," said Q-C manager Don Long, whose team finished the first-half by dropping 17 of their last 28 games. "I our approach has been much better. We are now playing this game the way we are suppossed to play it." The Angels' armed forces pointed the way to the winners circle on this day, as Castillo threw 5% strong innings in game one. Now 2-4, Castillo Davenport city council passes stadium expansion resolution By John Marx Staff sports writer By an 8-2 vote Wednesday, the Davenport City Council approved a resolution to expand the seating capacity of John O'Donnell Stadium when a Triple-A baseball franchise and lease are secured for the stadium. Discussion during the meeting, however, left the strength of the resolution somewhat in doubt. The lone dissenting votes cast by the 10-member council came from 1st ward alderman Neil Harrison and 6th ward alderman Larry Minard. "We are excited about it," said Quad-City AAA Committee chairman Harry Pells of the resolution. "We felt we had at least seven solid votes entering into Wednesday's meeting, so getting an extra one is great. "This is just what we need to take to the rest of the baseball world. It puts us in a better light with baseball knowing we will have a facility that will be large enough to handle Triple A."
