Williams, Virgilio pace Pulaski 5-3 By RAY COX gle after the game, it seemed to PULASKI - David Williams was able to keep his secret. George Virgilio apparently didn't keep his, but little did it matter. Williams shook off a snoozing arm :to record his first complete game of the Appalachian League baseball season and Virgilio drilled his nemesis pitch for a three-run homer as the Pulaski Braves rallied for a 5-3 victory over Bluefield on Thursday at Calfee Park. Pulaski trailed 3-0 before scoring five in the fifth, the lethal blow being Virgilio's third homer of the season. "*He [Orioles pitcher Brad Tippett] started me off with a changeup, a good pitch, for a strike," Virgilio said. "Then he threw me another one and I stayed back and got it. "The change has been the toughest pitch for me to handle all year. Of course, Virgilio wasn't sharing that information with the Orioles. Yet he suspected they knew it anyway. "I played on a junior team in the United States Olympic Festival with their catcher, Greg Zaun," Virgilio said. "He probably knew I had trouble with the change. He's a smart catcher." Williams, a right-hander from the state of Arkansas, played it smart by keeping his mouth shut after struggling in the early going. Well, not exactly keeping his mouth shut. .. "*My arm felt really good warming -up and it felt good in the first couple of innings," he said. "But then, I don't know whether it was because it got cool or what, but my arm started tightening up on me and it just went completely dead. No pop on my fastball." When this intelligence was conveyed to Braves manager Randy In- SPORTSWRITER catch him by surprise. "He told me after every inning, 'I feel great, I'm getting stronger.' Last time out, he pitched an outstanding game then told me later his back was killing him the whole time," Ingle said. "The guy doesn't want to come out. He's : a hard-nosed son-of-a-gun. We've got a lot of them on this team." Williams scattered 11 hits and shut out the Orioles over the last six innings. "George's home run really picked me up," Williams said. "I take my hat off to him. After they got me some runs, I felt obligated to my teammates to hold [the Orioles] where they were." BRAVES BRIEFS: League batting leader Pat Dando of the Braves was involved in a collision at first base with runner German Paredes and left the game with a bruised knee and ribs. Pulaski trainer Mike Cerame said Dando would be fine for tonight's season finale with the Orioles. Dando went 1-for-2 to increase his average one point to.358. Orioles third basemen had brutal night. Paredes was taken to Pulaski Community Hospital with a suspected collarbone fracture, but X-rays proved negative, Bluefield trainer Dave Werner said. Scott McClain, Bluefield's scheduled starter at third, broke his nose in three places taking a bad-hop grounder in pregame infield prachad to be replaced by Paredes... Dando was voted player of the year and Trent Mongero most popular, it was announced before the game.
