I f I Three Slain, . Two Hurt In Harlan Strife Violence Breaks Out , In Kentucky Mine Workers' Strike HARLAN, Ky., Aug. 21. (U.R) Three men were shot to death and at least two others Were wounded near here today in fighting connected With a jurisdictional dispute between the American Federation of Labor and the United Mine Workers (CIO.). Most of the violence occurred Hear the Bcnham Mine of the International Harvester Corporation. It was reported that hundreds of pickets, many armed, were strung along the Benham-Lynch Road. Close Road To Public The dead included Barry Wood, Denham miner, whose car was riddled by bullets as he drove along the Benham-Lynch road; Tom Eldridge, Denham, shot from a mountain-top ambush with a rifle, and a Negro named Bush, also apparently shot from ambush. State police and sheriff's officers had reportedly closed the road to public traffic, and police reserves Were being rushed to the Benham Inine. Other Miners Strike? It was also reported that workers at the nearby Lynch and Black Star mines struck today because of the alleged failure of operators to pay the wage differential recently agreed upon between northern and louthern operators. The A. F. of L. union recently Won bargaining rights at the Benham mine, and U. M. W. members are said to have struck in protest.
